How to stop procrastinating and get things done

Posted By SGK

Achievers take action. Non-achievers give excuses. Period.

You have big audacious goals and you know what needs to be done. Yet you find yourself procrastinating or postponing things for tomorrow.

Your future is created by what you do TODAY, Not tomorrow.

In this blog, I am going to share with you the science behind procrastination as well as an effective 2-step technique to stop procrastinating and start getting things done right away.
Recently, I watched the Tamil movie Vikram Vedha and I loved this dialogue where Vijay Sethupathi says, “If there is a problem, don’t look at the problem, always look at the root cause.”
Makes sense, isn’t it?
When you have a problem taking action, instead of trying to push yourself to take the action, let’s first look at the root cause.
What is stopping you from taking the action?
We, human beings, are driven by two main factors in our life – PAIN and PLEASURE.
Anything that is painful, we tend to avoid or stay away from it.
Anything that is pleasure, we embrace or do it right away.
Let’s take the most common example in business  – Meeting new customer . You know meeting a new customer is great for you to get more new business  yet you avoid it because it is painful to step out of the office meet new client. Instead, you embrace pleasure (seating at office) and browsing in the internet!

Now, you know the root cause of your procrastination – PAIN.

Something about that action is painful for you and hence you are avoiding it or postponing it.
So, how do you overcome this challenge and get things done?
In my Life Mastery program for entrepreneurs, I teach this effective 2-step Pain to Pleasure technique, practicing which my clients take determined actions leading to transformation in their life and business.

Here’s the technique:

Step 1:  IDENTIFY YOUR BIG 3’s

Ask the question, “If I take this action now, what is the biggest impact it can create in my life?” Come up with a list of at least 15 to 20 results this single action can produce.

Choose 3 results which trigger you emotionally – you feel so good about it. For example, I can take my family on vacation can make you feel so good than I can recruit more people.

Step 2: INCREASE THE PLEASURE ELEMENT

Get a pictorial representation of the 3 results and stick it in a place you can see often, many times in a day.

Assuming your Big 3’s are – your children’s education, a vacation in Paris, and a top entrepreneur award – seeing the pictures many times every day will make the actions that you have been avoiding less painful and increase the pleasure element of actually doing it and achieving your Big 3’s.

Your action expresses your priorities!

Prioritize your Big 3’s. Actions will follow.

It’s time to inspire the world with your actions.
